Jorge Rodriguez Trip report on the Stella Australis and Southern Patagonia
People in Patagonia say that you can experience 4 climate stations in one day and it is true.
Marinelli Glacier and Ainsworth Bay were spectacular and we did experience very nice weather early in the morning. We saw few elephant seals since they were molting in the small sediment island across from where we disembarked in mainland Tierra del Fuego. The walk into the forest was very enriching and easy to do. Most of the walk is done using a boardwalk that was built my our staff to help protect this fragile wetlands.
Tucker Island was full of curious penguins as we approached the island in our zodiacs. Many young chicks were evidence of the success of this colony’s survival. Other species of birds like Rock Cormorants were easily seen on their nests around the rocky island,
Pia Glacier was magnificent, after a very nice and sunny dismemberment, the weather turned quick on us and very strong winds took over. Our crew did an excellent job adapting to weather circumstances and quickly brought us to the safety of the Stella Australis after a 2 hour expedition into the Pia Glacier overlook.
Cape Horn again proved to be a highlight of our trip. With 40 knot winds threatening to abort the landing 30 minutes before getting arrival, the weather improved and the captain was brave enough to let us disembark. After one hour in land, the winds picked up and a hail storm took over the island. Some passengers had to reach for cover and duck down to weather the quick system. The sun attempted a take over but the storm was very mighty and did not let it come out completely. Once again, our crew got us back safely into the vessel and on our way north.
Eight hours later, we were landing in a sunny and pleasant Wulaia Bay where a leisurely walk took us through the forest to the perfect vista point of this beautiful and historic bay. While reflecting on the Wulaia Bay view, I once again realized how lucky I am to be able to experience the splendor and magnificence of our destination and programs.
I return convinced that our programs are world class and must be exposed to everybody. Happy selling!
